The following is a list of private instructors who are approved to teach lessons at Pittsburgh Ice Arena. Each instructor is an independent contractor; the rink is unable to answer questions regarding cost, scheduling or availability. Please contact the instructors directly for information and scheduling.

Figure Skating Instructors:
Carrie Smilowitz, Director: All levels and disciplines of figure skating and hockey power skating. 28 years of experience including coaching 13 national events (singles and pairs,) 2 international competitions and 1 Junior National champion as well as gold medal skaters in both US Figure Skating and Skate Canada. Hockey students include players at the collegiate and junior levels. Her own skating accomplishments include being a USFS gold medalist and Sectional pair champion. Proud mother of a FSA gold medalist – National Showcase competitor and a PeeWee hockey player, Carrie holds a management degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
Jayci Freedlander teaches Basic Skills, Figure Skating, and Power Skating.
Ashley Lovasik: Recreational-competitive figure skating, basic skills and hockey power skating. 11 years of coaching experience. Her own skating accomplishments include being a US Figure Skating National competitor, International competitor, US Junior National competitor and gold medalist in field moves and freeskating. Ashley holds degrees in architecture and chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh.
Luke is the PIA hockey director. He is also the NHAHA player development coordinator and ADM head coach. He also is an Esmark Stars Assistant Coach. Luke has played with Kiski Area high School, AAA Pittsburgh Hornets, AAA Esmark Stars, and played in the ACHA Division 1.
Offers lessons for: Individual and/or small group hockey lessons. Any level player(s) accepted. As well as learn to skate or power skating.
Bruce is a USA Hockey Level 4 coach with 17 years of coaching and instructing experience. He is also an experienced power skating instructor. He has coached all levels of hockey, including A through AAA and Junior A and he coached the Amateur Penguins team at the 2006 PeeWee Hockey World Championships in Quebec, Canada. He has worked with players who have been drafted by or play in the NHL, AHL, OHL, and NCAA D1 and D3 University hockey programs.
Offers Lessons For: Hockey skating and skill instruction for individuals, small groups, and teams.
Karac currently runs his own goaltending school, David Goaltending. He works with goaltenders of all ages and abilities throughout western PA. He once was a Pittsburgh Viper and also played for the Shadyside Academy prep hockey program graduating in 2004. He was a walk-on goaltender for the Robert Morris University NCAA D1 men’s ice hockey team and also played NCAA DIII at Satin Mary’s University in Minnesota. He has played in the FHL and Finland Div 2 after completing college.
